I got Quake 4 within a month of it's release, and the online scene was dead. You can still find a few quake 2 servers (almost all are moded), but nothing compared to 1&3. Both of these games have very polished multiplayer experiences. There is a reason Quake 1 and Quake 3 still have very good online communities. So the mechanics were definitely closer to quake 2. Quake 4 was never meant to be a quake 3 sequel, it was a quake 2 sequel. Doom 3 multiplayer wasn't very popular either. It felt much closer to doom 3 multiplayer with a higher player cap. Movement wasn't super smooth, the weapons didn't have a quality balance, and the general speed of gameplay was slow. Compared to Quake 3, Quake 4 was very slow and very clunky. People were expediting Q3 with doom 3 graphics, and what we got was something different.
